Facebook Best Practices for Journalists

facebook+journosOne question I repeatedly get when I am speaking at a social media workshop or while chatting with my colleagues over a break or lunch or covering an event is about Facebook.

Should I sign up for Facebook or Twitter, Why Facebook and not Twitter, How do I boost the number of likes…

Unless you are a celebrity popular enough to attract hundreds of thousands of followers in Twitter like Luis Chataing, for most journalists the best bet is Facebook.

This is why: For most news websites, Facebook is the largest source of traffic.

If you haven’t yet, I recommend to read this Facebook + Journalists page with tips in how to get started using Facebook today.

Also, whether you are about to embark on your social media branding plan or have already started it,  I recommend to like or subscribe to these Facebook pages and start using them as you would with news wires. It’s an easy wayt to start getting familiar with how Facebook works.

Social Media Branding for Journalists (TV and radio)

This Social Media Branding for Journalists workshop was developed with TV and radio talent in mind.

Considering the influence of Facebook as a leading online traffic driver, it was crucial to raise awareness among TV colleagues about their potential to reach a wider audience by embracing their brand in social media, especially during sweeps.

To display this two-day workshop, we used a PowerPoint on steroids called Prezi.

Juanito’s Lab: The Final Stretch

Juanito’s Lab is a documentary film that explores the life and art of 22-year-old Juanito Castillo, a blind musician proficient in 14 instruments and considered one of the most talented and versatile young accordion players in South Texas.

The documentary is the creation of Enrique Lopetegui and Guillermina Zavala, who started documenting Juanito’s story in 2005.

The production of the documentary is in its final stages and Juanito helped recording this video to request more cash to fund the rest of the project.
